Available world wide Star Fruit ( averrhoa carambola ) can cause major problems with patients with renal failure and Gout.
Medically termed "Star Fruit intoxication" is causes by excessive amounts of Star Fruit juice or the fruit itself.

Patients on kidney dialysis machines can have major alterations of consciousness.

Also known to develop CNS or central nervous system problems and gastrointestinal symptoms.

Star fruit and Gout

2 to 4 fruits both of the sweet or sour variety can deliver oxalic acid which increases serum creatinine and oxalate nephropathy (abnormal state of the Kidney) .

This can bring on Gout and rapid deterioration of the renal function.

From the "Wood Sorrel" family star fruits are used to clear excessive heat from the body, they are known to detoxify and are a diuretic.

Known to treat arthritis, coughs, diarrhea,hangovers,hemorrhoids,bladder stones, kidney stones, toothache and contain , potassium, carotene and Vitamin C.

Under no circumstances should a patient with any type of kidney / renal problems use this fruit.
People with diabetes should also be wary of eating this fruit.

It has also be warned against Gout sufferers.

So if you have any doubts do not touch star fruit.. there are plenty of other fruits out there that have medicinal properties.

Always seek the opinion of a medical practitioner before taking any medicine or herbs for Gout.
